They know what I'm talking about, something like 25% of the province was without power for days just a week and a half ago due to our latest extreme weather event. They constantly breaking down, or the wires are being blown down in the strong winds often leaving customers without utilities for days. Power and phone/fiber is all underground with a utility box every 2 blocks every so often.Īs our weather has gotten more and more extreme with each passing year, the old utility poles are becoming very problematic. Almost everything built after say the 1960s either had underground to begin with, or was converted to it at some point along the way. I live in the capital of Canada, and utility poles are a sight almost completely unseen unless you are on the oldest streets in the city. Utility poles are cheaper, but they are much less resistant to weather, and uglier. Underground utilities are more expensive to install and maintain, but they more weather resistant and eye pleasing. It would be nice to have the option of having underground electrical with the water pipes to run under the streets.Įach style having different pros and cons.
